Community Spotlight on Neighborhood “Art Galleries”

Community Spotlight on Neighborhood “Art Galleries”  by Ginnie Lin

These days, we see a lot more of our neighbors out and about, trying to social distance but also trying to stave off cabin fever. Whether taking animals out for a walk or biking around with stir-crazy kids, people have taken the opportunity to get to know their neighborhoods better.

One creative family began a neighborhood “Art Gallery”. Passersby could contribute art by placing it in the mailbox. The family would rainproof it, usually with clear plastic bags, and display it on their fence.

There are all sorts of different pieces, from intricate pencil sketches to multimedia creations. All contribute to a cheerful addition to the neighborhood. You can’t help but smile when you see it. Children would race to see if their art pieces had been posted up.

Now is a time when we learn that disconnecting from our electronic gadgets can help us reconnect and process these events with our families.  In times like these, coming back to art and expression can be very healing.  And who best to learn it from than our creative kids?

If you see any other examples of inspiring art galleries or activities in your local neighborhood, share with us at yhfcirino@gmail.com or post it in the comments section of this article.

Swing by our “Children’s Art Contest” and “Cov-ART General Contest” pages to see some more of the art submissions coming in from our communities!  We are happy to announce that we are receiving new pieces for the 2nd Cov-ART children’s contest.  All submissions will be accepted until Monday May 11th, 2020.  In order to confirm that you are entering the contest, please send an email to yhfcirino@gmail.com with a cropped photo of your children’s art submission.  The contest award winners will be announced on Friday May 15th, 2020.
